Why Every Seafarer Must Know CPR – It’s More Than Just a Safety Drill.

Onboard a ship, help isn’t minutes away—it’s miles away.

Yet, many seafarers lack confidence or hands-on understanding of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), assuming it’s solely the responsibility of the Captain, Chief Officer, or 2nd Officer.

That mindset needs to change.

CPR is not just a checkbox in safety training. It’s a life-saving skill that every crew member—from a deck cadet to an AB or cook—must know and be ready to perform without hesitation.

Common shortcomings onboard:

Limited refresher training after initial STCW basic safety.

No regular practical drills on CPR.

Over-reliance on medical officer or senior officers.

Lack of confidence to act in real emergencies.

A cardiac arrest on board doesn’t wait for rank or duty roster. In those critical first 3-4 minutes, any crew member with CPR knowledge can be the difference between life and death.

What can be done?

Conduct hands-on CPR refresher sessions during safety meetings.

Simulate real-life emergency scenarios during drills.

Encourage open discussions and remove fear of doing it wrong—doing something is better than nothing.

Make CPR awareness part of onboard safety culture, not just training folders.

Remember: Life-saving isn’t a rank—it’s a responsibility!
